The Borg
February 25th, 2009We started eons ago as separate beings with separate thoughts, completely isolated.
Through the advent of language, we got better at communicating with each other, but this was still a long ways from truly understanding anothers thoughts. We are a sea of of islands, each completely distinct in thoughts.
As time went on, we got better at communicating with each other. Not only in spoken word, but with the written word as well. Writing also allowed people to speak across time, for once something was written, it could be read at any time, whether that was ten minutes later, or ten years, or ten centuries!
In the past ten years, our level of communications has gone up yet another level. Our written word is not just a daily newspaper or a letter. We went from e-mail, to web pages, to blogs, to chat, twitter and IM.
Communication now is almost instantaneous amongst so many of us, and the connectedness of us is starting to resemble the kind of connection in a large brain. Each of us has many contacts, and each of those contacts has many more, and not all of them overlap. the concept of a “meme” spreading over the global community is somewhat like a “thought” becoming known to the whole.
The concept of the Borg in StarTrek: The Next Generation was a bunch of beings tied together at the thought level. We are working our way towards this, although we have a long ways to go. for one thing, we dont (as of yet) have a chip implant to be always connected to the centralized system (thats coming!). There is also the question of being able to turn it off (the Borg didnt have this choice).
The way we can currently get legions of computers to work together on a problem (via the SETI distributed method, or parallel processors) could prove very interesting when this is applied to human minds. Imagine if solving a problem suitable for human could be sent to 100 or a 1,000 minds to each ponder and resolve all or a part of it, together.
IF we dont blow ourselves up, I feel this last point will not be a question of if – but when
Memorial Day weekend
May 26th, 2008Ahhh, what a weekend! Camping, relatively simple livin' and conversation. No computers around, not really even talked about. We were busy enough, that I didnt really even miss the outside world for a few days.
I met a lot of new people, (but not ALL new to me), and overall, it was an interesting time.
Birthday Dinner
May 16th, 2008This evening we went out for a friends birthday, to a little place known as "The Tilted Kilt" - which besides being a pub serving many types of beer and some food, has some cute lil gals in kilts (but wearing something underneath).
The food was Ok, the the scenery was good! ![]()
Anniversary
June 27th, 2005Two Years today! I think we will be having these for a very long time. I either found the right one, grew up, or both!
Sterling Casino Lines
June 25th, 2005We spent the weekend with friends, and Saturday on the Sterling casino boat (3rd time for us). I dont gamble much if at all, but the boat ride is nice and the show in the bar is great. A guy does Frank Sinatra and a gal does Marlyn Monroe.
This Gal always makes a good show of it, and is great for the part!
Country Living
May 16th, 2005We spent this weekend with a friend. I dont think I would have found it, had it not been for them meeting us at the ONLY paved intersection in town. (the one traffic light is at that intersection). Little place called Interlachen.
Being on close to 16 acres, after driving dirt roads for almost 2 miles, certainly FEELS like BFE to one used to Orlando and other cities of 750,000 and greater. We have a great time though, and could see many stars, and generally have fun and take walks, and see no one, except those that lived there. Relaxing indeed ![]()
Too bad there is no work up there for programming.. oh well ![]()
Friday!
April 1st, 2005Its Friday, its over (as far as work) and I am free again for a time!
Bowling again tonight, and our league will be over in a few more weeks.
What will the weekend bring? Probably more playing on the computer, just like I have been the past few weeks.
New House, Still Broke
March 16th, 2005LOL - I hate having to be on a tight budgetary leash! This seriously cuts into my beer money!
Oh Well, short term problem, things will be better in April! Beats living on the street, and it really is a nice quiet neighborhood ![]()
The Weekend
March 12th, 2005Man! Its a beautiful Day! I was outside for some of it. a clear sky, nice temps, a light breeze!
We had a BBQ as well, and walked the yard.. Truly wonderful! From the cool grass under foot (and the texture of it) to the sights of the neighborhood.
I dont think we get many days like this!
Sunday Mornings
March 6th, 2005A Sunday paper. Delivered to your driveway. A tradition of many families. Its not like the news in the paper is leading edge anymore, that can be seen on the Net. No, the good part is the comics, the ads, the local TV guide, and perhaps some memories for one not living in a house for so long.
